WHAT MIGUEL’S MOTHER SAYS:

We suspected from a very young age that his eye was turning, but neither the pediatrician nor the ophthalmologist were able to diagnose it.
When he was 5 years old, the eye turn became quite evident. We sought out specialists in pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus. On every occasion we were told that corrective surgery of the extraocular muscles was the only possible treatment.
米格尔还非常小时，我们就怀疑，他眼睛是斜的。但儿科医生和眼科医生都检查不出来。
米格尔5岁时，眼睛就斜得非常明显了。我们去看小儿斜视专家，每一次，医生都告诉我们，需要做眼外肌矫正手术，说这是******的******方法。
As parents, we were disheartened to consider the possibility and risks of a major surgery in such a young child. Our research indicated that the probability of success with a single surgery was low, and that there was a risk that he could be left with constant double vision. We looked for treatments with less risk to the health and welfare of our son. We decided that surgery could be an option to consider if all others failed, but only when Miguel was older and his visual system more mature.
作为父母，一想到孩子还这么小，就要做大手术，心里就非常难受。我们发现，一次手术很难成功，还可能导致******性复视。于是，我们就开始寻找那些风险小，对孩子比较好的******方法。如果其它方法无效，我们再考虑斜视手术，而且要等到孩子长大些，视觉系统发育更成熟些。
I am a physiotherapist and was studying the field of neuroscience. I sensed that there might be treatments with higher success and less risk. We were willing to go to the ends of the earth, if necessary, to help Miguel. We found www.strabismus.org, which reported on the different types of strabismus and different approaches to treatment. We discovered that there was something called optometric vision therapy to treat, among other disorders, strabismus. To our surprise, in the list of treatment centers, there was an optometrist in Madrid who provided optometric vision therapy.
我自己是一名理疗师，当时就在研究大脑神经科学。我意识到，神经科学的******方法，成功率可能更高、风险更小。为了能帮助孩子，我花费了大量时间，研究相关内容。

In November 2006, Miguel had his first evaluation with Pilar Vergara in The Centro de Terapia Visual Skeffington in Pozuelo de Alarcón, Madrid. Pilar wanted to consult with Dr. Robert Sanet, who was in Madrid at the time. They both agreed that Miguel’s case would not be easy, but even if we eventually had to consider the surgical option, the result would be more satisfactory if Miguel had therapy before and after undergoing surgery. Pilar offered us both her professional abilities and her emotional support. We began on this path not knowing where it would start or end, but this approach best suited our way of looking at health.

In 2007, Miguel began treatment at the Skeffington Center. Throughout that school year, we worked hard, but the results were minimal. Miguel was very young and in spite of our hard work, he did not understand the purpose so he was not able to integrate the changes into his daily life. We moved to the country and discontinued the therapy for a while.
2007年，米格尔开始在诊所进行视觉训练。在一整学年里，孩子训练都非常努力，但效果却微乎其微。米格尔年龄太小，无法理解训练目的，也就没办法把训练成果结合到日常活动中。后来我们搬到了乡村，那段时间就没有再训练。
Miguel had always been aware that he could opt for the surgical solution, if he thought he would have a better quality of life. Yet, even in the moments when classmates teased him because of his crossed eye, he did not consider surgery as an option.
In 2014, more mature Miguel took the initiative to resume therapy. He made a conscious decision to do the exercises, commit to the program and go to the weekly sessions. This time he was treated by Ana Vargas, as Pilar had moved to Albacete.
米格尔一直知道，如果他愿意，可以去做斜视手术。但是，即使同学嘲笑他是斗鸡眼，他都没想过要做手术。
2014年，米格尔长大了一些，他主动要求，继续进行之前的视觉训练。米格尔这次训练非常积极，把训练当做自己的责任，并且每周都坚持。这次训练由安娜•巴尔加医生负责，因为皮拉尔医生已经搬到阿尔巴塞特。
Miguel has recently had an important breakthrough, of which he is very proud. The amount of eye turn has been significantly reduced, and his eyes look MUCH straighter. In addition, Miguel says that his visual awareness has also improved. As parents, we rejoice and are proud that he is able to participate consciously and willingly in an activity that helps him move forward and improve.
米格尔***近有了重要突破，这让他感到非常自豪。他的斜视角度大幅下降，眼位看起来正了很多。此外，米格尔说自己的视觉意识也提高了。孩子积极参与训练，并且取得了很好的******效果。作为父母，我们对此感到非常高兴。
